DEVELOPING NEWS: Military jets escorted a commercial pasenger jet into JFK Airport, having taken over from Canadian RAF. Authorities are methodically sweeping and clearing cargo flights that were held at U.S. airports in Newark and Philadelphia after foreign law enforcement agencies reported finding suspicious packages from Yemen in London and Dubai.

The found inbound to JFK contains a package from Yemen. The passenger flight was escorted by Canadian F-18s to the U.S. border and had been picked up by two American F-15s.  The flight landed safely. The FBI does not believe passengers were in danger.

In a news conference, President Obama declared that Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (Yemen) is most probably responsible for the threats. The two suspicious packages examined so far, one in Dubai and one in England, did contain some explosives, wires, and potential detonating devices.  Officials believe the packages were part of a"dry-run" mail-bomb plot to get explosives into the United States. The two packages examined were destined for Jewish centers in Chicago.  All churches, mosques and synagogues have been alerted to be vigilant should they receive any unsolicited or unexpected packages, especially those originating from an overseas location.

Law enforcement agencies are still investigating whether packages found on UPS planes at Philadelphia International Airport, Newark Airport, East Midlands airport in central England, two UPS truck in New York City, and a FedEx facility in Dubai were part of a dry run mail bomb plot.

The FBI reported that two of the suspicious packages were addressed to religious institutions in Chicago.

Law enforcement officials also are investigating a suspicious packages in Portland, Maine. No word on whether that package has any links to UPS or Yemen.

As an additional safety measure, FedEx embargoed all shipments originating from Yemen," said Maury Lane, spokesman for FedEx.  (Sources: Fox News, Washington Times)

As the Lord leads, please pray:
  • Against all efforts of terrorists to ship explosives or bombs into the United States.
  • Thanking God for the safe landing of the pasenger jet.
  • That nothing has "slipped through" that will create danger to people and property.
  • For federal and local law enforcement agencies to be increasingly vigilant.
  • For additional security precautions regarding cargo that are to be set in place by Homeland Security.

Failure of the Will

Low evangelical voter turnout helps to undermine traditional values

by Jim Ray

Americans have never voted in favor of gay marriage. Whenever the issue has been placed in the hands of voters -- as it has in no less than 30 different states -- it has been rejected by the American people.

How is it, then, that gay marriage is legal in five states and now also in the District of Columbia? The answer is a study in chicanery, political manipulation and, most significantly, a failure of the will of evangelical Christians who subscribe to the biblical model of marriage consisting of one man and one woman.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle have long recognized there is more than one way to effect change. Take the recent health care overhaul ... Opinion

Public Notice?

Exploring the question of public vs. private prayer

by Travis Koop

A group of Arizona high school students from Wickenberg Christian Academy were touring the nation's capital in May when they stopped to pray on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court building.

It was there that they, along with their teacher, were confronted by a Court police officer who told them to move off of the steps to continue their prayers. He cited statute 40 U.S.C. §6135 which reads: It is unlawful to parade, stand, or move in processions or assemblages in the Supreme Court Building or grounds, or to display in the Building and grounds a flag, banner, or device designed or adapted to bring into public notice a party, organization, or movement. The group then moved to the sidewalk to continue their intercessions.

“ ... By Means of the Bible”
What you don't know about Dr. Benjamin Rush

The Bible
by Adam Colwell

When he died at his home in Philadelphia at the age of 68, Dr. Benjamin Rush was the most celebrated physician in America. He was also remembered as a social activist, a champion of public medical clinics to treat the poor, and a fierce advocate for the abolition of slavery.

Yet what you perhaps don't know about Dr. Benjamin Rush is that he was not only one of the nation's greatest patriots ... but a Christian who was bold about expressing his faith in God -- and his belief about the Bible's needed place in America.

Pray for President Obama and Administration

President Obama acknowledged that he is concerned about the "substantial" leak of more than 91,000 sensitive documents, and gave reassurance that "the information doesn't reveal any issues" that aren't already available.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced that eighteen states and the District of Columbia are in the second round of the "Race to the Top" competition for federal stimulus funds to help schools overhaul their systems.
Pray for President Obama and Secretary Duncan this week

Pray for Congressional Leaders

Rep. Linda Sanchez (California) has introduced legislation to expand the wage protections of home care workers, previously exempted from the minimum wage and overtime protections granted to the rest of the nation's work force.

Both Congressional bodies have passed the nearly $59 billion emergency war funding bill, the bulk of which will go toward the U.S. troop buildup in Afghanistan.

Pray as our Representatives and Senators draft, discuss and deliberate over legislation.

Pray for Judicial Needs

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton (Arizona) granted an injunction preventing Arizona from enforcing key provisions of a controversial immigration law, stating "the law should be put on hold until the courts study and rule on the law."

A federal judge has ruled that Augusta State University, Georgia, may remove a Christian student from its graduate counseling program for her belief that homosexuality is morally wrong.
Pray for our judges across this nation to seek wisdom from the Lord.

Pray for Current Events

THE WAR
Following the leak of the thousands of documents on the Afghan war, analysts in the region are debating whether the U.S.-Pakistani relationship will suffer a setback, particularly with the Pakistani's spy services.
Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met in Baghdad with Iraq's leaders to press for a resolution to their political impasse; the Iraqi Parliament having already postponed or cancelled sessions.

Pray about the war and peace efforts in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

TERRORISM
Sen. Robert Menendez (New Jersey) has postponed a hearing on the release of the Lockerbie bomber because of what he described as stonewalling by the British and Scottish governments.

A blue-ribbon coalition of European Union lawyers and human rights activists have demanded that Iranian leaders be brought before the International Court of Justice for incitement to genocide and brutal repression of its own citizens.

Pray against the evil source of terrorism in all its forms and wherever it exists.

THE ECONOMY
The outlook for the U.S. economy remains mixed, according to the Federal Reserve's most recent survey. Overall U.S. economic activity is increasing but not robustly and in a few districts has lost steam over the past several weeks.

American's confidence in the economy eroded further in July amid worries about a job market that has proven stubbornly stagnant. The report raised concerns about the economy not improving during the back-to-school season.

Pray about the state of the national economy and all who are suffering under the prolonged recession.

ISRAEL AND THE MIDDLE EAST
A top security official in Gaza is considering setting up a bigger military force, first with volunteers and eventually with a mandatory draft, aimed at further tightening Hamas' control of Gaza.

Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu met with Jordan's King Abdullah to try to encourage his efforts to persuade the Palestinians to resume direct peace talks, although the Palestine's chief negotiator and U.S. envoy reject the idea.

Pray for peace in Israel.

HEALTHCARE
A growing body of scientific evidence points to the long-lasting effects of maternal nurturing while children are young, finding that "warmth and closeness" fend off alcoholism, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

A gel being developed in France can help decayed teeth grow back in just weeks -- possibly putting an end to fillings. The gel works by prompting healthy tooth tissue cells to multiply, gradually replacing what has been lost to decay.

Pray for those chemists, scientists and psychologists who strive to improve the health of all.

Presidential Quote of the Week

Theodore Roosevelt
Warren G. Harding (1865-1923), 29th President of the United States

"I accept my part with single-mindedness of purpose and humility of spirit, and implore the favor and guidance of God in His Heaven. With these I am unafraid, and confidently face the future. NASA's "outreach" to Muslim nations -- and the questions it raises
by Dr. Tom Askew

Behind the recent media flap over whether or not the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) should foster better international relations -- especially to predominately Muslim countries -- there are some questions every thinking American and praying Christian should be asking.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden first mentioned the directives he had been given by President Obama in a February speech, saying: “He charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math; he wanted me to expand our international relationships; and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science ... and math and engineering.”

Opinion
Pray for President Obama and Administration
President Barack Obama has unveiled the nation's first national oceans policy intended to cut through many competing interests -- from offshore drilling to fishing to shipping -- and established a National Oceans Council.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received a "noticeably less toxic" reception on her visit to Pakistan, possibly because she brought with her more than $500 million in economic aid. "I could feel the change," she said.

Pray that our nation's efforts at home and abroad would bring the desired results.

Pray for Congressional Leaders
The Senate and House are squabbling over $22.8 billion in supplemental funds for U.S. troops in Afghanistan, attempting to offset the expenditure with recession to government programs no longer needing funding.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey (Wisconsin) has proposed a 40% cut to the White House's $1.35 billion request for the 2011 "Race to the Top" incentive designed to spur reforms in K-12 education.

Pray that Congress would work to get governmental spending and programs under control.

Pray for Judicial Leaders
(The Supreme Court is in recess.) The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved Elena Kagan to be the fourth female Justice of the Supreme Court, paving the way for full Senate confirmation in a floor vote.

A federal grand jury in New York has subpoenaed Toyota's U.S. subsidiaries for documents related to problems with rods that connect a vehicle's steering to its front wheels. Hundreds of lawsuits against Toyota are pending.

Pray that the Supreme Court Justices will have a restful and restorative summer recess.

Pray for Current Events

THE WAR

The U.S. Navy has used a laser weapon to shoot down four unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) in a test off the coast of California. Shooting down the drones over water constitutes an advance over focusing on static targets.

A major conference in Afghanistan has endorsed President Hamid Karzai's goal that Afghan forces should lead security operations across that country by 2014. Insurgents still retain control of parts of Afghanistan.
Pray for our military men and women in every branch of service and whoever operating.

TERRORISM

The U.S. will impose new sanctions on North Korea, following the crisis over the sinking of a South Korean warship. The decision was announced this week as Secretary of State Clinton visited South Korea.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran's enemies are "idiots" employing "cowboy logic" and that UN sanctions will not make this country abandon its nuclear program.

Pray about the world's rogue nations and their desires to accumulate nuclear weapons.

THE ECONOMY

The Senate cleared the way for 2.5 million out-of-work Americans to start receiving unemployment checks again, even as economists disagree on whether extending these benefits discourages the jobless from seeking work.

President Obama's offshore drilling moratorium will cost approximately $2.1 billion in economic loss to the states along the Gulf of Mexico and more than 8,000 jobs in the first six months, according to a recently released study.

Pray for the stability of American families who are dealing with work and job losses.

ISRAEL AND THE MIDDLE EAST

Israel's outgoing Ambassador to the UN said that Israel is the "most isolated, lonely country in the world," and that the biggest threats to its existence are the international attempts to delegitimize it.

Israel successfully finished testing its "Iron Dome" missile defense system designed to intercept salvos of rockets from Gaza and Lebanon. "It's a relief, but it isn't a silver bullet," one official said.

Pray for God's protection over Israel on both the physical and diplomatic -- relational levels.

HEALTHCARE

Research suggests the babbling of infants with autism differs from that of children without it. The differences were spotted with 86% accuracy using automated vocal analysis technology, not yet a diagnostic tool.

A vaccine patch having hundreds of microscopic needles which dissolve into the skin could cut out the need for painful needles and boost the effectiveness of immunization against disease, according to Emory University researchers.

Pray for the researchers who continually investigate and test methods for improving the health of Americans.
Presidential Quote of the Week

Theodore Roosevelt
Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), 28th President of the United States
"The Nation has been deeply stirred by a solemn passion, stirred by the knowledge of wrong, of ideals lost, of government too often debauched and made an instrument of evil. The feelings with which we face this new age of right and opportunity sweep across our heartstrings like some air out of God's own presence, where justice and mercy are reconciled and the judge and the brother are one."

Temptation Trio

Socialistic
Responding to the socialistic wave in this nation

by Marsha Crockett

Is there today a surge of socialism in the United States threatening to quiet the voice of Christianity and diminish our religious freedoms?

Pastor and author Dr. Charles Stanley cautioned in an Independence Day message that there is reason to be concerned, saying this movement toward a socialistic culture can place the means and methods of production and distribution in the hands of the government.

True, we are hard-pressed to find a socialistic government that has honored Christianity ... or any other religion for that matter. At best, such authority has hassled Christians; at worst, it has attempted to destroy it as seen in Marxist regimes. Many believers in Jesus are quick to rise to this challenge of fighting against the powers that dishonor our God-given free will. Such an economic and political philosophy, in fact, squashes the foundational element of God's image within all human beings -- to be creative as we live our lives. But as we address our concerns over our diminished freedom, let us at the same time prayerfully consider the temptations we face in the midst of the uproar.

“Give ‘em Watts!”
The heroic, bittersweet story of Rev. James Caldwell

Washington Monument
by Adam Colwell

America's revolutionary history is filled with ministers of the Gospel who also served as great patriots willing to sacrifice all for the cause of independence.

Known as the "Fighting Parson" of the Revolutionary War, Rev. James Caldwell was one such man. Born in Cub Creek in Charlotte County, VA, the seventh son of Scots-Irish settlers, Caldwell became pastor of the Presbyterian church in then-Elizabethtown, New Jersey in 1762.

Among his congregation's members was Abraham Clark, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and more than 40 commissioned officers of the Continental Army. In 1776 Caldwell was named chaplain of a regiment that mainly consisted of members of his church, and later served as a commissary for New Jersey militia troops.

Presidential Prayer Team Update

July 8, 2010

To Prayer Team: Thank you very much for keeping me in your prayers. It is very thoughtful and I am grateful for your support and encouragement. - 26 June 2010 - General David H. Petraeus, United States Army Commanding This week Adopt Our Troops in Prayer came back online after being inoperable for nearly nine months.  The difficult decision was made late last year to discontinue due to a lack of donations and technological resources.

The Presidential Prayer Team has made significant changes to reduce our operational costs, including staff cutbacks and relocating into donated office space. During  this time we continued praying and fiscally watching for a proper time to return the Adopt Our Troops ministry.

In just the last 48 hours we have seen an explosive response to our step of faith and thousands of adoptions have poured in. There are over 165,000 military personnel waiting to be adopted! We are excited about the overwhelming participation, but realize our costs will exceed our forecasts.

We need your help!

First, we must raise our funding far more than we had anticipated.

Second, we need you to invite one or two more praying friends to join with us, so all 165,000 now waiting will receive our prayer support.

More Than Free Speech

Family With Flag
At risk is our very religious freedom as believers in Christ.

by Dr. Tom Askew

For the second time in two years, Christian witnesses from Acts 17 Apologetics were expelled from an Arab Festival in Dearborn, Michigan. The free speech rights of these missionaries were violated -- and it is difficult to imagine a scenario in which Muslim protesters or hecklers would be similarly arrested at a Christian festival in the United States.

It was first in 2009 that Nabeel Qureshi and David Wood were expelled from the festival for asking questions of a vendor whose sign stated, "We’ve got answers." The vendor summoned security guards who pushed and struck the two men and knocked around their camera as they were escorted out. This year, the representatives from Acts 17 Apologetics stood outside the festival to offer passers-by a free copy of the Gospel of John in Arabic and English. After distributing only a few minutes, eight uniformed Dearborn police surrounded them and told them to move at least five blocks away from the festival.Issues

Windy City Gun Ban Overturned

Chicago's streets
But on Chicago’s streets, the real battle isn’t about the right to bear arms.

by Travis Koop

In 2008, police in Chicago, IL recorded over 510 homicides. In the same year, the Associated Press released that 314 soldiers had been killed in combat in Iraq. While Chicago homicides increased 15 percent from the previous year, losses in Iraq during the same year decreased by nearly 35 percent.

Now, only halfway into 2010, Chicago’s homicide tally is at 217 murders, an increase from the first half of 2009. Based on these sobering statistics, it’s not a stretch to say that Chicago violence is desperately out of control. By the numbers, Chicago would even seem to be more deadly than Iraq. According to Chicago Mayor Richard Daily, the violence in the city is proof that a ban on handguns is necessary…and the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in late June to lift that ban will simply intensify the already rampant violence that threatens to make Chicago the most dangerous city in the nation.

Washington Monument
by Adam Colwell
A full 40 years in the making, it’s one of the nation’s most iconic structures, dedicated as a tribute to one of the country’s most revered personalities -- and remains as a towering witness to America’s most undeniable Christian heritage.
The Washington Monument was built between 1848 and 1884, constructed in two phases from 1848-56 and 1876-84. It was created to honor George Washington’s military leadership during the American Revolution…but a lack of funding, political turmoil and uncertainty about the future of the Union almost doomed the structure.Heritage

Pray For President Obama & Administration

President Barack Obama has bypassed Congress to appoint Dr. Donald M. Berwick, a health policy expert, to run Medicare and Medicaid. The recess appointment was needed to carry out the new health care laws, said White House.

The Transportation Security Administration on Tuesday issued a directive that would bar "controversial opinions" from inbound emails to government employees, and reversed itself on Wednesday after free speech outcries.

Pray that members of the Administration would be wise in their timing, choices and directives.

Pray For Congressional Leaders

West Virginia’s governor will delay appointing a successor to the late Sen. Robert Byrd while they review that state’s election laws that apply to when an election must be held to fill a vacant seat.

A bipartisan panel investigating charges that the Justice Department wrongly abandoned a case against the New Black Panther Party is calling for a separate probe of the matter and also issuing a new round of subpoenas.

Pray for all those charged with upholding the law to act in thoughtful and cautious manners.

Pray For Judicial Needs

The Supreme Court has concluded its 2009-2010 term and will reconvene in October.  Denying rumors to the contrary, Justice Anthony Kennedy plans to remain in his seat on the Bench until  at least the 2012 elections.

The U. S. District Court for Arizona received the filing of a suit by the United States against Arizona aimed at blocking an Arizona law that requires local police and sheriffs to question  legal status of those stopped for other reasons.

Pray that our courts would consider the wide-ranging implications of the decisions they render.

Pray for Current Events

THE WAR

In the first incident of its kind, NATO mistakenly killed five of its Afghan army allies in an airstrike while they were attacking insurgents. Three American soldiers were also reported killed in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan.

Publicly, the U.S. credits Pakistan with helping against al-Qaida and the Taliban. Privately, the relationship is often marked with distrust and double-dealing as Pakistan runs double agents against the CIA.

Pray for our military and other special forces acting to secure freedom for the people of Afghanistan.

TERRORISM

A long-time associate of Osama bin Laden pled guilty to charges of conspiracy and material support, laying the groundwork for the first-ever conviction under the military commission system established by President Obama.

In an indictment unsealed this week, prosecutors revealed that the failed plot to set off bombs in the New York subway system last year was part of a larger al-Qaida terrorist conspiracy targeting both the U.S. and England.

Pray for all those who are making advances against the scourge of al-Qaida and other terrorist groups.

THE ECONOMY

Postal rates will increase in 2011, with first-class stamps rising from 44 cents to 46 cents, starting in January, as the Postal Service works to deal with its massive budget deficit, reduced volume, increased costs, etc.

The cost of harboring illegal immigrants in the United States is a staggering $113 billion a year (or roughly $1,117 for every legally-residing household in America) according to a recent study.

Pray about the ever-increasing costs of government and its impact on the families of America..

ISRAEL AND THE MIDDLE EAST

Ahead of the anniversary of the 2nd Lebanon War, the Israeli Defense Force has released information indicating that Hezbollah has more than 20,000 fighters and 40,000 missiles spread across southern Lebanese villages.

President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu affirmed US-Israeli closeness after their White House meeting Tuesday, but strains remain over Iran and the Palestinian peace process.

Pray for the people of the Middle East who seek peace.

HEALTHCARE

New Medicare data reports that heart attack death rates in hospitals have dropped markedly, noting the American Hospital Association has worked very hard to clear patients’ blocked arteries and speed time of responses.

A simple blood test to predict Alzheimer’s disease up to 10 years before symptoms appear could be developed after researchers found high levels of a protein called clusterin can be an early sign of the condition.

Pray for the doctors, technicians, nurses and researchers who are concerned with the health of Americans.
